Bookcase with Wine Rack
This is a challenge into which I put a LOT of extra work. The knotty pine cabinet has three adjustable shelves on hidden hardware. The shelves are reversible so when they begin to sag under the weight of "stuff" they can be turned over. The wine rack is where all the really challenging work is. All the right slanting pieces are one piece with female sliding dovetail dadoes very precisely located. Fitted between them are short panels with stopped male sliding dovetails (aka French dovetails). This means that you can only see the dovetails from the back, which is covered. The wine rack was intended to be removable, but it fit so tightly that it is for all practical purposes a permanent part of the cabinet. The wine rack tails were hand cut with a Stanley 444 dovetail plane that made precise fitting very easy. There are just over 100 precisely fitted joints just in the wine rack. I believe it would support the weight of a pickup truck!
Mirror Image Bathroom Vanities
This mirror image vanity set is wall mounted about 12" off the floor using French cleats. It is made of walnut plywood and old growth black walnut harvested many years ago near Olney IL. Notice the grain matching across the drawers and around the top. The top drawer front on each side was made from the same board, and so with all the drawers. The drawers feature soft closing under mount hardware and hand cut dovetails. But the really special thing is that while searching for appropriate boards in the resource pile, an unusual defect caught my eye. It turned out to be a bullet embedded in the wood. I contacted the client to see if they wanted to include that in their cabinets. "OF COURSE WE WANT THAT!" was the response, so if you look at the left top drawer front you will see the bullet not far off center.
The customer also had me build the matching mirrors, and yes, I did the etching.
This glitzy bathroom cabinet has all the hall marks of timeless, classic design. It is constructed of painted (four coats rubbed out) poplar and birch plywood with a granite top and back splash. The six overhead lights give PLENTY of light to examine yourself thoroughly from any angle using the movable side mirrors. The drawers are on full extension very quiet hardware and the doors open easily and stay shut on concealed European hinges. Silicon bumpers make this a very quiet cabinet. It is after all, adjacent to a bedroom! All interior shelves are adjustable. You may be able to zoom in to see the "pump" style faucets, another classic element. All mirrors are 1/4" plate glass removable for service without removing any molding.
Stained Oak Vanity
Family Room Organizer
This cabinet was ordered to match the shelves. It is made of oak and oak plywood. Notice the scallops along the edges to match the shelves. The customer had no design offerings, just wanted a rather plain cabinet to put under the shelves to hide the "clutter". When I delivered and installed the cabinet, the customer was ecstatic that I got such a close color match and "...it looks like we got it all at once from the same place!". My intent to make them a usable heirloom was fulfilled too.
Two Drawer File Cabinet
It is hard to find anyone who will take the time to build a quality wooden file cabinet. This cabinet is made of solid oak and poplar dovetailed drawers running on high quality full extension hardware. Each drawer holds a letter size hanging folder frame. It could be made of any other domestic hardwood, like maple, cherry, coffee bean, ash, walnut or such. No design offered by customer, just "build me an oak two drawer filing cabinet with letter size drawers." I'm confident that it will bring premium prices at every auction it attends because buyers know a good heirloom when they see one!
